umbracoRSS: Make guid optional

description

It doesn't look to me as the previous solved issue of setting isPermaLink to false solves the problem, as it looks like Google is still trying to index the URL given in <guid>.
(See http://www.codeplex.com/umbracoext/WorkItem/View.aspx?WorkItemId=9193)

Even though it shouldn't when isPermaLink = False.

I propose that we make it optional if the <guid> element should be present or not in the feed (let it be on by default). The element is optional in the specs anyway (see http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/rss/rss.html#ltguidgtSubelementOfLtitemgt).

Turns out that this is actually a pretty serious issue.

In fact so serious, that sites using this package will have a lot of their URL's wrongly indexed. Resulting in (the wrong) half of the site being marked as Duplicate Content in Google, and all internal and external links having no SEO / link value at all.

I highly recommend that <guid> is being removed from the package (after all, it is optional), and that the whole community is being informed about this issue.

There ARE ways to overcome this problem and telling Google what REAL URL's are, but it requires a bit of work.

See this Google search for an example, and notice how most of the URLs on Umbraco.org has wrong names:
